Candy Cane Paper Horse

Hello all!  I'm sorry for the delay, I had hoped to have this posted last week but the time just keeps slipping away! It didn't help that we got a HUGE dump of snow and our internet was down for a day.

Anyway, I hope you are more prepared for the holiday than I am!!! I've got a "to do" list longer than my arm and am finding it difficult to drag myself away from that silly game 'Bejeweled Blitz'. Ever played it? Well, I'll tell you, it is addictive. I don't recommend trying it until your baking and decorating and gift wrapping is well underway!

I've also been making quite a few gifts for my mom and family (and don't forget the teachers!) so I'm sorry to say they've been occupying a lot of my time. Okay, enough with the excuses, on with the good stuff!!!

This little guy here is what I've done to jazz up the candy canes on my tree this year. Isn't he cute!?  Something I've learned by making these is every candy cane hook is NOT created equal!!!  So, I've given you a template here that worked with most of my candy canes. You may find you need to adjust the template a bit here or there to fit yours better.

This project is pretty self-explainatory but I'll give you a few tips here.

What you will need for supplies:

• candy canes
• cardstock in complimentary colors
• stamps and embellishments
• ribbon
• adhesive

First of all you will need to download my template here :)

Cut out all of the pieces as you like. You can choose to cut the two head pieces apart or keep them together and fold the horse down the bridge of his nose (this is what I did, I found it easier to do less gluing).

Make sure to cut two ears!

Next, stamp your pattern onto your head and mane pieces. I used the filigree image from the Season's Best stamp set from RBD.

I then glued the horses ear and mane (after adding some slits for interest) to the back of the head piece. I should mention, I sponged a distressing ink on all my pieces before assembling them. I then laid my candy cane inside the horse. I glued the chin of my horse and then chose to 'sew' the neck and mane area closed for a little bit of detail.

I added a ribbon as the reign, by gluing it from one side and looping it around to the back to create a hanger. I'm still considering adding a bridle. 

There are so many ways to make these and they also work well with fabric (and they're re-usable if you do them that way)!!  My kids love the way these look and they have asked me to make them for their little friends as well.

That is soooo cute. I know some older folks that would like them as well as the kids. Thanks for an idea for a delightful favor!

I haven't played Bejeweled Blitz, but I do have my own silly computer games that are just as addictive.
